Support Pens of Hope Project

Nortehanon, after visiting a school in her hometown saw the school kids without pens, started this little project called Pens of Hope. She aims to collect pens and writing materials that she could give to those kids. This is like the 3pid Handog sa Edukasyon Project of GMA and Procter & Gamble but on a blogger level.

You may contact Nortehanon here on where you can send the pens. You can also get a Pens of Hope badge here to help spread the cause.

Be A Little More Thankful

Jan 28, 2009

I woke up on the wrong side of the bed this morning. I nudged my husband and made lambing for him to make breakfast and pack lunch for the us and the kids and was happily surprised when he quietly obliged! I was shouting instructions on what to cook (hot dogs) and how many should go into each lunchbox and to remind my son to take his meds after eating his breakfast, while still in bed. I only got up when my eldest asked for his baon. I was still grumpy, maybe because of a bad cold, I self-rationalized. But I know deep inside that its because I don't want to go to work today after taking a leave of absence yesterday. Yes, I want to be a stay-at home mom and have more time with the kids. Sigh. But its not financially possible at this time. So I reluctantly prepared to go to work.

On the way to drop my pre-schooler to school, I felt a little ashamed of myself for being less thankful of my job and source of income. Wednesday is garbage day on our street and I saw a couple digging through the plastic garbage bags to look for whatever they can recycle and sell. On the next street, I saw some kids doing the same. And I realized that I really should be more thankful; my kids are happy and healthy and able to go to school, my husband is loving and sweet, my house is a home and the job that I have pays well and the company is no danger of collapse.

Yes, I have a lot of reasons to be thankful. Though my dearest desire to be able to save enough to quit my job and start my own business and have more time with my family may just take a little more time, I am thankful for what I have now which is more than most people have.

What I Want To Write About

Jan 26, 2009

... but cant make the words come out:
  • Manuel Villar as President
  • How to make money to buy ticket for the Eraseheads concert part 2
  • Why I want to be a stay-at-home mom
  • What I want for my birthday
  • Rustom Padilla as Bebe Gandanghari
  • Pops and Martin, eww!
  • Vicky Belo, Hayden Kho and Katrina Halili, another eww!
  • How the health card I am paying for the kids is worth every peso
  • How to get my exercise-groove back
  • Where are those doctors when you need them
Well as you can see, I cant write anything about them so I will just continue on visiting my favorite blogs and hope that I will be inspired to post something about it.

Transcript of President Barack Obama's Inaugural Address

Jan 21, 2009

I didn't get to watch the live inaugural address of President Barack Obama so I am reading the transcript here at NY Times. This is one of my favorite part of his speech:
"And so, to all other peoples and governments who are watching today, from the grandest capitals to the small village where my father was born: know that America is a friend of each nation and every man, woman and child who seeks a future of peace and dignity, and we are ready to lead once more."
I had goosebumps reading this transcript. His presidency is propelled with such goodwill and hope, not unlike our very own Cory Aquino when she was sworn to office. The people are all eager for change and reading his speech, you feel like you are part of a great thing and would like to give all your effort to work for that change.

I hope this part of his speech was heard loud in clear by our very own leaders. It really felt like he was speaking to them.
"To those who cling to power through corruption and deceit and the silencing of dissent, know that you are on the wrong side of history, but that we will extend a hand if you are willing to unclench your fist."
Goodluck, President Obama!

My Twilight Book , A Birthday Present

Here is my husband, proudly showing off the Twilight book which is his early birthday gift to me. He already bought me Eclipse last December. I am in no hurry to have these books because I 've already read them, but this is just so sweet! He is looking quite pleased with himself, don't you think?
Had he not bought Twilight, I was willing to settle for these used Sidney Sheldon books being sold at Filbars here at the mall.

Well, thanks for the book sweetheart! I love it, and I love you!

Sick Leave

Jan 19, 2009

Dear Sir,

May I please take a leave of absence tomorrow? I have a terrible headache due to a clogged nose and a persistent and very irritating dry cough. I don''t want to subject you and the group to the unpleasant sound of my coughing, like a mad dog barking in the middle of work and to explain again and again that I am not crying and the sniffling is due to this bad cold.

Thank you for your kind understanding.

(insert name here)

PS. My to-do-list is on top of my keyboard. If you need to know status of anything, see whether there's a check mark opposite said item.

PPS. I left my phone charger at the office and my cellphone's lowbat.

Not Just Another Social Networking Site

There are lots of social networking sites out there but do they really have what you need? I have a friendster account, which I use mainly to look for my old schoolmates and a multiply account to showcase my pictures and nice finds from the net. I also have account from several forums to discuss various areas of interests. But what If there is a site where you can do all this? Good thing I recently discovered a unique networking site where people can share their "stuff" and get connected with people of same interest. By sharing the same interests in books, cars, movies, vacation spots, etc, you get to find new friends! Or better yet, invite your friends so you can all have fun checking out the stuff you all love. You also get to upload pictures, discuss any topic of interests, and share recommendations and even promote your blog! Cool, huh! You can also add some items in your wish list so your friends will have an idea what you want during your birthday. So, if you want a social networking site that will give you all that and more, check out Acobay.

Mrs O Fashion & Style

Jan 16, 2009

A morning TV news about the website documenting US First Lady Michelle Obama's fashion and style caught my attention and of course, I had to check it out. It shows The Mrs O's (a clear reference to Jackie O, herself an icon) dressing style in various functions she attended even before and after she became a prominent public figure. It must be tough to be in the public eye and to be compared to such style icons as Jackie Kennedy, but it seems she is holding her own quite well. Her now-famous election night dress, which drew varied reactions has already been given a thumbs-up by Vogue. And it is indeed very difficult a thing to choose a dress for the historic January 20! The whole world looking at you like that! Did you know that then First Lady Carter made a "repeat", an unforgivable and genuine fashion gaffe, when for "sentimental reasons" she wore the gown she don six years ago? And to think that America was then in a very serious recession? Grabe!

Cebu Pacific offers ZERO fare for Asian Flights

Jan 15, 2009

Cebu Pacific is again offering a zero-fare promotion for most of its international flights and it has also added flights to Shanghai, Macau and Kuala Lumpur, according to a recent press release. The seat sale is from January 16-22 for travel from February 1-March 31, 2009. Of course, its non-refundable and exclusive of surcharges and government taxes.

Roughly, a trip to Singapore costs P5.3k while to Hong Kong, its about P4.8k. Wish I have some spare money. My passport has yet to be stamped!

Eraserheads Reunion Concert Part 2?

Jan 12, 2009

As a macuha.com subscriber, I got this entry post in my email and I was like, Di nga? I want to watch this concert, if there really is going to be one, but not with the same intensity I had for the previous one. I think the earlier reunion concert had more drama and was a dream come true for a lot of fans. Of course, this is still a dream come true, but for me, it doesn't have the same pull. Or maybe its just me saying, you've seen one reunion concert, you've seen them all? I am still a die-hard fan though, even singing to Overdrive while learning to drive over the weekend.

Truth is, I am more excited to hear the album of Master Rapper Francis M and the main man, Ely Buendia entitled Sickos. From the news, the album will come out in March.

But if free tickets will again magically fall from the heavens, (ehem, ehem!), you will surely see me braving the crowd and shouting "Group hug, group hug!"

Update:

No tickets will fall magically from the heavens because there will be no VIP or SVIP tickets this time according to Miggy. Tickets are priced at P3000, P1300 and P300. But since this will be held at a bigger venue, the number of people who will attend is sure to be overwhelming. Avoid being near the SM Moa on the 7th if you are not there to attend the concert.

LP 40: Pula (Red)

Jan 8, 2009

(Red is the color of love. In this week's Litratong Pinoy, here again is my family, my inspiration, my life, that is filled with love. To my husband, thank you for 11 years of loving and for being my partner in this happy life. To my kids, thank you for giving me the sweetest love.) er, loosely translated, he he.

Taken during last year's Mothers Day picnic at the Pasig Rainforest.

An Enchanted Christmas

We went to Enchanted Kingdom in Sta Rosa, Laguna the Sunday after Christmas and it was insane! There were so many people queued in various rides, even the minor ones. It took us almost 2 and a half hours just to get to ride the extremely disappointing Lego Riders in Rialto! Though while in line we get to witness the snow (or bubbles) show and a Christmas song by a chorale from Makati. My sister-in law's family had to wait the same amount of time to get to ride the swans! Then we had to wait another hour in line just to get to ride the Ferris wheel! We enjoyed the Rio Grande Rapids , which was as always fun and wet, because though the line was really long, it was moving quiet fast than the other rides. Unfortunately, the Jungle Log Jam was closed on the day we were there. Of course, even the wait for food carts on hot dogs and french fries was irritating. My husband was disgusted when having lined up for 20 minutes already, he was told the waiting time for the fries was another 30 minutes! We ended up eating a lot of cotton candies instead! The kids enjoyed themselves regardless of the long queues. Kids have an irritating way of amusing themselves at the expense of their parents! Like asking to go to the bathroom every 30 minutes, then pointing to have a go at another kiddie ride which thankfully has smaller queues, then pointing at food carts, while the other parent is stuck at the impossible long line at the Rialto!

It was really not my idea to go to the amusement park on a weekend-which was also a holiday, expecting the hordes of people who will be there. But my sister-in-law's family were there early in the day, as a treat for her daughter's birthday and my eldest, who wants to be with his cousins, begged us, almost irritating us to death until we finally relented. We were at the park by 3pm, already shaking our heads in disgust once we saw the lines of cars waiting to park! Of course, just paying for entrance fees took us another half hour.

Before the park closed at 12 midnight, we were running to several major rides which were almost closing, and by then almost empty. We still get to ride the swan, the roller coaster (not me, just my husband and his teenage nephews!) and the flying chair.

At the price of P400 for adults and P320 for kids for ride-all-you can tickets, it was worth the smile in my kids faces!

UPCAT Results for SY 2009-2010

Jan 5, 2009

My dearest sister took the UPCAT for this coming school year and when I saw this post from Ms D, I was nervous as hell. But the results are not yet out. Whew. I think they will be released on January 10 or thereabouts. I will help send my sister to college that's why it matters to me a lot where she qualifies. Hay, I really wish she does pass. For the results, check out the UPCAT website or Ms D's blog.

Lets all wait for the results here.

Sana. sana.

My New Year Resolution

This is the first time that I will commit myself to a New Year resolution. Its just that I have never believed that you have to wait for the new year to do or change something about yourself. But while cooking and watching Unang Hirit this morning, they said that once you have written down(yes, write it down to make it more realistic and achievable) that something that you want to do/change/achieve/work for and share it with people who cares about you, they will help you get it whether consciously or unconsciously. So for the year 2009, here are what I resolve to be:
1. Be a better wife, mother, daughter, sister and friend. Yes, I love my family and friends without reservation and I know that they do too. But sometimes, other things get in the way of showing them that I love them so I resolve to show my love unconditionally. I will try to say I love You more often, in words and in deed and give a little more than my share of hugs, kisses, pat on the back or just my ear for support. Call friends more often.
2. Be a little less cynical and have a little more faith in the human race. Laugh more and always think about the good side of things. Be happier.
3. Learn to budget and save more. Cut back on non-essentials. Always remind self will be sending 3 kids (pre-school and elementary) and 1 sister (college) to school next June. That should do it when deciding whether buying need or want.
4. De-clutter and de-stress. Be proactive. Do what needs to be done right away and stop procrastinating. Start right now.
5. Be healthier this year and encourage the whole family to do the same.

I just realize that I am just writing down my reason for living! I live to love my family, be happier, be debt-free and stress-free and a little more healthier. Well, then I should have no problem with my new year's resolution.

So, what about you? How do you plan to live the year 2009?
