Paranormal Activity

Oct 31, 2009

Maybe it was the mood, but were rightfully scared over high-grossing low-budget film, Paranormal Activity. We were supposed to take a nap this gloomy afternoon so we put out the lights and we were all settled to sleep, until I had the brilliant idea of showing the movie on my laptop. My kids huddled together and each has a pillow over their faces, but peeking at the movie anyway. We were really scared and they kept asking me if it was true!

This one and a half hour film started with boyfriends Micah and Katie filming their house and their bedroom while they slept. Katie said that she feels this presence with her since she was an 8-year old kid and when she was 13 and then until now. So Micah decided to film it and see if they can capture the being or whatever it is on film. And they did. From doors moving to shadows and footsteps, things turned quickly to worst. And the end was really tragic. We were all sitting up by the 20th night of their filming! It was indeed scary!

Of course, after scaring them with the movie, Mommy had to tell them that its just a film and its not true. Then my husband started telling them ghost stories and they were scared one more time! Ishi even asked me to come with her inside the restroom! Oh well, we will just watch a comedy later tonight before they sleep so they will forget about it! How's that for a Halloween treat?

The Best in Power Steering

Oct 29, 2009

When I was just learning to drive, my husband used to tell me I was lucky because our car has power steering. He said he had to drive using manual steering before and it was really hard . He had to use all his strength and so driving was not much fun then. Since I enjoy the feeling of power when I drive, I said we better take care of our steering wheel. I told him about Power Steering Pros which is a high quality supplier of steering parts. He was really amazed to find out that they have such lowest price offerings, the best customer service and they ship anywhere for FREE!!! I guess all of that set his mind to rest and really enjoyed teaching me how to drive.

LP 81: Amoy

Ako po way walang pang-amoy.

Cool Idea: Math Tutoring Online

This week is exams week for my kids and I think I am going crazy! What with the demands of work and the rush to be home on time to tutor and review the kids. My friends tell me I am so old-fashioned and out-dated by doing this tutorial manually, when I can apply for an online tutorial for my elementary kids and college sister. I really have no problem with all other subjects, except Math so when my friend told me where I can find Algebra help, I was very relieved.

See, I believe that for kids to retain the principles of a subject, especially on answering Math problems, they must practice and practice. While they might know Math answers to difficult formulas, a key to remembering is actually solving for these answers. That for me is the key to retention and understanding. So I have them answer Algebra word problems online and will be very happy if they soon became adept at doing these exercises. I know some kids and adults who still cannot do simple Math word problems, but thanks to online tutorial, my K12 kids can do a lot better. I told them that for every hour that they use the internet for social networking, they must at least check out Algebra 2 help to practice their Math skills.

And since kids associate their online activities as fun, they are actually quite willing and eager to do some online Math tutoring. And the online tutorial service they offer comes with a free demo so the first time we checked it, my kids were actually amazed. They even kept saying that they have their very own virtual teacher but way, way cooler! And they can even use this service anytime and whenever they need it. Now, isn't this a great idea?

Investing in Gold

I came across an article that says one of the best ways to save some money for your retirement is by buying gold. This is actually not the first time I heard of it but as I am more into investing in stocks and bonds, I didn't took it quite seriously back then.

But reading further, it seems that the value of gold coins has surpasses all other investment instruments in the market! A gold coin can also be a collectors item, and a rare one even sold for as much as $5 million in an auction in 2002. Wow, now that is really what you call an investment.

In a conversation with a trader friend of mine, he explained further that a bullion coin is a coin struck from precious metal and kept as a store of value or an investment, rather than used in day-to-day commerce. He told me that investment in gold bullion is almost a sure thing. He emphasized that they sell at a premium over market prices and the price is generally believed to continually rise. He is sure that most gold investors buy it as a hedge or safeguard against economic, political, social or currency-based crises, and is therefore a much more sound investment.

I am actually thinking of reading more about investing in gold because I want to be assured of a nest egg for my retirement.

First Time Voters at Comelec Registration

When my sister turned 17 last February, I already told her to register for the 2010 elections because she can already vote by then. Of course, she said yes and despite my insistence that she do it sooner than later, she had so many excuses and only did went to Comelec last Saturday, exactly a week before the deadline. She was there after lunch and the queue was too long, they were asked to write their names on a list and to return today, Tuesday. I expected this scenario already and can only shake my head at my sister and her classmate's procrastination. Typical Filipino trait, wouldn't you agree?

It will really test your patience to register now, I tell you. I remember that I didn't have the same problem then. My then future mother-in-law told me and her son to register right away when we became eligible to vote. There was a satellite voters registration in our barangay and we did it quite painlessly. He was just my boyfriend then, but his mother thinks its serious and I will become a resident there anyway, so I registered at their place. Such foresight from my mother-in law. Ha ha.

Oh well, as for the other first time voters out there, just bear with the Comelec. It is really not their fault that the registrants are all rushing now to beat the deadline!

Affirmation

Oct 26, 2009

I have been a very bad person lately. I felt so bad about something that somebody did to me, I ended up not talking to them. But I think it is for the best. I am tired of being judged and always misunderstood. At least now that I am not talking, they cannot take my words and twist it completely. But this just reminded of one of my favorite songs, Affirmation by Savage Garden.

I believe the sun should never set upon an argument
I believe we place our happiness in other people's hands
I believe that junk food tastes so good because it's bad for you
I believe your parents did the best job they knew how to do
I believe that beauty magazines promote low self esteem
I believe I'm loved when I'm completely by myself alone

I believe in Karma what you give is what you get returned
I believe you can't appreciate real love 'til you've been burned
I believe the grass is no more greener on the other side
I believe you don't know what you've got until you say goodbye

I believe you can't control or choose your sexuality
I believe that trust is more important than monogamy
I believe your most attractive features are your heart and soul
I believe that family is worth more than money or gold
I believe the struggle for financial freedom is unfair
I believe the only ones who disagree are millionaires

I believe in Karma what you give is what you get returned
I believe you can't appreciate real love 'til you've been burned
I believe the grass is no more greener on the other side
I believe you don't know what you've got until you say goodbye

I believe forgiveness is the key to your own happiness
I believe that wedded bliss negates the need to be undressed
I believe that God does not endorse tv evangelists
I believe in love surviving death into eternity

I believe in Karma what you give is what you get returned
I believe you can't appreciate real love 'til you've been burned
I believe the grass is no more greener on the other side
I believe you don't know what you've got until you say goodbye(Repeat 2)
Until you say goodbye
Oh no no no no no ( Repeats itself many times fading)

Now, I will not place my happiness in other people's life and just make my own way.

More "Me Time" for Mommy!

Oct 24, 2009

Ondemand

As a working mother, almost all of my time is devoted to my family and career, leaving only a small portion for "me-time." When I am lucky, I can have some time alone when the kids are all sound asleep. That's the time I am free to do what I want and watch the movies and TV shows that I like. But it is so frustrating that as soon as I have the remote control, the shows that I love are either over or are not yet showing. It is irritating to finally have the time, but not the freedom to choose what I to watch. That is why I appreciate Charter on Demand. Because I have access for free, there is no more waiting and scheduling my time around movies and TV shows. And I don't have to beg for the remote when the show I want is on. Another great thing is we don't have to experience all the hassles of watching a movie in mall because they have such great selections. It is indeed great that On Demand is free to access and I can customize my page to show only the shows I love. And one of the coolest thing is that they also have the newest HD shows! So if you want to be updated as well and not miss this gem, get updates and fun extras on Charter’s Facebook page. You can also learn more at charter.net/ondemand so you can finally decide to get your own!

Now that you can have a more enjoyable "me time", you can also think of it as one great way to bond with the family. Try to schedule a movie-marathon and know that everybody will surely love it!

Mommy Moments: Tantrums!

Oct 23, 2009

mommy moments
Today's Mommy Moments theme is Tantrums and I had to check all of my pictures in my computer just to look for one! See, my kids are not big on tantrums because they know that it wont work. But they do love to try anyway!

This is my eldest making paawa. We were waiting at a doctor's clinic and he was already hungry and wanted to buy those overpriced chips at the vendo machine. I was laughing ended up laughing so hard when I saw this picture he took of himself whiling away time.

My second son is more behaved than my 2 other kids and instead of a tantrum, he does sulking more often.

Now, this is a full blown tantrum, a first for my little girl! I think she was fighting with her Tita over something we were eating. Her Tita took it, when she thought Ishi didnt want it anymore. Then she cried! Ha ha, I just love this picture.

And this one is a classic. Taken atop the chocolate hills viewing deck in Bohol. There is Danniel, sulking.
Check out other Mommy Moments entry here!

LP 80: Masinop

Oct 22, 2009

We can now look forward to a 4-day weekend (November 28 is also a holiday!)and plan our vacations accordingly.

Here is a copy of the proclamation re November 27, 2009.

So check out Cebu Pacific now for those seat sales and plan your trip early!

Real Men

Oct 19, 2009

Real men are not afraid of hard work.
Real men are not afraid of a little (or a lot!) mud.
Real men are not afraid to volunteer on a clean up drive!

And they can even look good while doing it!

These are the real men of the Intercity Riders Club, headed by our good friend, Paul Baquirin. They go riding out of town, looking for the thrill of the motorcycle ride. But they are not afraid to go down and get dirty for a good cause!

Oh, and the real man in my life? Here he is, a lot tired but undefeated. And he still manages to smile that wonderful smile of his!

Mommy Moments: A Day at the Mall

Oct 16, 2009

mommy moments
I had a hard time looking for a picture for this week's Mommy Moments theme and I realized that it has been such a long time since we went malling!

Would you believe, the only pictures I was able to find were taken sometime in early 2008! Whew, that is such a long time since we went to a mall!

And can you see how my kids enjoyed their day at the mall? I guess we have to do this again soon! Thanks Mommy Moments for reminding me!

See more Mommy Moments entry here.

Have You Heard of Screen Pass?

I recently heard of Screen Pass from an IT friend of mine. He is raving about and how it made his life as as a systems administrator a lot easier. He said that it is a very cool screen locking system that allows him to have more control over the security of their work stations. It has an auto log off feature that locks the system once an allowable idle time has been reached. It protects against security breach and saves a lot on power. He said that using screen pass also allows him to monitor computer usages and plot manpower needs as well. I have to agree, this is one cool feature!

Hope

Oct 13, 2009

How do you make a seemingly hopeless task seem bearable? How and where do you start a job that threatens to overwhelm you, both physically and emotionally? You bring friends of course!

This is the state of my house, two weeks after Ondoy. And without water and electricity and the mud still filling up the house, we sought the help of dear friends to accomplish this task. And they responded, and did MAGNIFICENTLY!

These wonderful guys are my college friends, kumare and BFF. Rona and Rodney, Ehms and Paul and my dear sister Dianne and her husband Kuya Mher, were just a text away. My other house in Quezon City was also flooded and they also helped me out there. They were the first ones to give me pillows, blankets and towels after the flood. And in Montalban, they braved the mud and the smell and helped try to re-build our house.

They are indeed a remarkable bunch of people and I am lucky to know them as my friends. And why HOPE? It's because, as Paul said and I have to agree, he is there not just to help us shovel mud, but also to give us hope. We all laughed at this, but deep inside, my husband and I are so touched by their friendship and show of support. Indeed, these great friends helped us look at our house with new-found hope.

Another Aspiring Public Servant

Oct 11, 2009

I think the title above and the picture are already sufficient for you to understand this post. This was again taken in Dela Costa Homes in Montalban Rizal this Sunday, 2 weeks and a day after Ondoy.

It's not that I am not thankful. But can't they help without pasting their face on the truck? And this one is obviously gunning for the 2010 elections.

Public Service

Oct 9, 2009

This was the state of Dela Costa Homes 5 in Montalban, Rizal when we went there last Tuesday to visit our house. This truck below is being used to move the mud from the main street to the still flooded plaza. We are of course thankful to our governor from Rizal for this truck. But of course, lest we forget from whence the truck came from, a reminder is there, just in case.

This is a public service brought to you by Gov. Ynares and Engr. Alejandro. And don't your forget it.

We beggars can't be choosers. And while seeing that truck and the banner leaves a bad taste in my mouth, I will let it go for now lest I be called an ingrate.

Life After Ondoy

Oct 4, 2009

We Filipino's are very resilient. We are always likened to a bamboo tree who bends, but doesn't break at the strong winds. And so we are all picking up the pieces of our lives after Ondoy. But one week after, life is not yet normal. We tense at the slightest sound of rain, and our ears are pickled by the sudden gusts of wind. But despite all of these, we can still laugh at how we survived and still swap stories of our survival. And upon hearing the laughter of my kids, I know the worst is over.

My kids are the lucky ones to have not experienced any trauma because of the typhoon. My husband's niece and nephew feels very apprehensive at the slightest rain and are crying already upon seeing the water rise on the street. One of our neighbors, are just now hauling their things and moving to a new house in Taguig, after having rented here for more than 7 years. This was the worst flooding here, but they dont want to take any more chance. They dont feel safe and secure anymore. I guess, we really all have to move on after Ondoy, and still feel lucky that Pepeng changed course. This flood will always be one of my worst nightmares, filled with what-ifs, especially with regards to the safety of my children. But life goes on. I just hope that we all learn from this calamity and treat nature with the respect it deserve.

Rapid Share Made Super Easy

Oct 3, 2009

We all use rapid share to download the latest movies, songs or books and it is really easy. But what if the file you are looking is a week old or a month old? The volume of files in rapid share that is sometimes difficult to look for them. Good thing that a rapidshare search engine now makes it super easy to look for files to download! Otherwise, you will be overwhelmed by the sheer volume and would get tired of looking for something to download. This is actually a very user-friendly concept to make rapid share super easy! Would you believe that I was able to download my favorite war movie, Platoon, just by using the search engine? The movie was such a big hit when I was in high school so that was more than 10 years ago! Thanks to search engines indeed!

Barrio Bayanihan for Ondoy Victims

Barrio Bayanihan

Although we are all reeling from the effects of Typhoon Ondoy, we Filipinos are known for our "Bayanihan Spirit". So I ask all of you to support a collective group of bloggers in Barrio Siete in their call to help the victims of this typhoon.

Just this morning before I head for work, my mother and my kids were sorting out their clothes and choosing what they can already spare. Those were the same wet clothes I washed and dried for two days. We will give them to residents of Tatalon in Quezon City which is near our place. Their houses were submerged and until now, most of them are in evacuation centers. Thankfully, power was restored yesterday and some are already trying to return back to their houses.

I consider myself very lucky for having only lost replaceable furniture, and all my family safely at home now. I hope that those who were not affected will find it their hands to give what they can. I am also calling for help and assistance for the residents of Dela Costa Homes 5 in Montalban, Rizal where I also have a house. They are in dire need of food and clean water. There is now power and water supply there yet so we haven't visited our house there. I cannot anymore regret the loss of all our things at that house, only thankful that we were in Santol and not in Montalban when the calamity struck.

So please, please, please, give some help at Barrio Siete.
