Don't Sleep Angry

Mar 26, 2013

Leni Robredo's high school commencement speech at Unibersidad de Sta Isabel, Naga City.  A very good read.  So simple and true, straight from a mother's heart. A must read: Don't sleep angry

Excerpt:

Don’t sleep angry, because you never know what the new day will bring, or if the subject of your anger will still be there. When saying goodbye, as many of you will today, try to leave a happy, peaceful memory.
Don’t wait until you’re older to serve and make a difference. Each day that passes brings new ideas and expands our world. You, young as you are, can make a difference. Stand up and make us clueless adults listen. Bring your ideas out. Let them shine! Serve. Decide to begin today.

Happy Birthday, Drexelle!

Mar 25, 2013

My eldest son Drexelle (in the middle, ha ha ha, because you might think I am mom to Superman) turned 15 years old today.  I was so young when I had him, and was just months away from college and just barely employed.  But I have never regretted even one moment of having him in my life.  He is one of the greatest gifts that I have received and I love him so fiercely.

To my son, you will always be my baby no matter how old you become.  My dearest wish is for you to realize your dreams and become a better person.  I know you will achieve my dreams and wishes for you because you are a good boy and because we will do everything in our power to help you.

I love you very much, Anak!

So Undercover Movie Screening

Thanks to Ehms, Nuffnang and Adidas Neo, I was able to watch the screening of So Undercover. I actually made a post to join this contest, but I forgot to register my entry.  Good thing Ehms did write her entry at the last minute, won and took pity on me, ha ha ha.
The movie is hilarious.  It is not intellectual and all we did was laugh.  It was feel good movie, and we felt happy after because we were laughing so hard at all the silly scenes and there were a lot! No need to take this movie seriously because it is just a fun movie.  Expect more and you will be disappointed!
We also saw Teng, who is a long time friend and an on again-off again blogger, he he he. She is so busy wearing too many hats: a mom, an accountant, a wife, a friend, a daughter, a business woman; its a wonder she still has time to blog!
Oh and by the way, thanks Nuffnang and more movie screening contests to come!

Holiday Pay Guidelines for Holy Week 2013

Mar 21, 2013

The Department of Labor and Employment issued this pay guideline for Thursday, Friday and Saturday of the Holy Week:

The correct pay rules to be observed are as follows:

For the regular holidays on March 28 (Maundy Thursday) and March 29, 2013 (Good Friday):
• If the employee did not work, he/she shall be paid 100 percent of his/her salary for that day. Sample computation: Daily rate + Cost of Living Allowance x 100%. The COLA is included in the computation of holiday pay.
• If the employee worked, he/she shall be paid 200 percent of his/her regular salary for that day for the first eight hours. Sample computation: Daily rate + COLA x 200%. The COLA is also included in computation of holiday pay.
• If the employee worked in excess of eight hours (overtime work), he/she shall be paid an additional 30 percent of his/her hourly rate on said day. Sample computation: Hourly rate of the basic daily wage x 200% x 130% x number of hours worked.
• If the employee worked during a regular holiday that also falls on his/her rest day, he/she shall be paid an additional 30 percent of his/her daily rate of 200 percent. Sample computation: [(Daily rate + COLA) x 200%] + 30% Daily rate x 200%).
• If the employee worked in excess of eight hours (overtime work) during a regular holiday that also falls on his/her rest day, he/she shall be paid an additional 30 percent of his/her hourly rate on said day. Sample computation: Hourly rate of the basic daily wage x 200% x 130% x 130% x number of hours worked.

For the special (non-working) day on 30 March 2013 (Black Saturday):
• If the employee did not work, the “no work, no pay” principle shall apply, unless there is a favorable company policy, practice, or collective bargaining agreement (CBA) granting payment on a special day.
• If the employee worked, he/she shall be paid an additional 30 percent of his/her daily rate on the first eight hours of work. Sample computation: (Daily rate x 130%) + COLA).
• If the employee worked in excess of eight hours (overtime work), he/she shall be paid an additional 30 percent of his/her hourly rate on said day. Sample computation: Hourly rate of the basic daily wage x 130% x 130% x number of hours worked.
• If the employee worked during a special day that also falls on his/her rest day, he/she shall be paid an additional fifty percent of his/her daily rate on the first eight hours of work. Sample computation: (Daily rate x 150%) + COLA.
• If the employee worked in excess of eight hours (overtime work) during a special day that also falls on his/her rest day, he/she shall be paid an additional 30 percent of his/her hourly rate on said day. Sample computation: Hourly rate of the basic daily wage x 150% x 130% x number of hours worked.

Know your rights and be guided accordingly.

Temple Hopping In Cambodia: Sunrise In Angkor Wat

Mar 16, 2013

Our flight to Siam Reap, Cambodia arrived at 1045 pm but were able to get to the hotel by midnight.  Our first order of business after checking in was to book a van(full day hire at US$51) to take us to Angkor Wat to view the sunrise.  We woke up at around 330am, took a bath and went down to meet our driver.  We did not hire a tour guide and decided to just do it on our own.  We bought a one week pass for US$40 each and we were off to see the. sunrise.  Okay, I have seen sunrise and I have seen sunset.  And on the scale of 1-10, I will give this a 7.
Maybe I could have given it a 10 if we have a nice camera that could have taken better pictures.  As it is, my Sony point and shoot only to managed to capture this. And there were so many people too!  But we had fun waiting for the sun to come out and light up the temples!
Despite the sea of people, I was able to manage a solo picture!  Tourists behind me were sitting down  by the way.  The best view of the sunrise is when you can see its reflection on the water. Too bad the sun was shy.
As we were about to go back to the hotel for breakfast, we saw the sun peeking on the right side of the temple! Before the other tourists got there to take a picture, we had ours, and they were beautiful.  I give my sunrise pictures a 10. Ha ha ha.
After the sunrise viewing, we went back to the hotel to load up on the buffet breakfast. And then we were off to more temples that you will see in the next posrs!

Cambodia Food Porn!

Mar 15, 2013

More than the cultural tour of the temples in Cambodia, I had a lot of fun with the food.  We had dinner at Khmer Family Restaurant in Pub Street and tried their best selling local dish.  And it was great! Unfortunately, I forgot what they were called! But I am sure one of them is called Amok, and of course there is the spring rolls (the best!)

I am hungry!
