A Trip to the Emergency Room

Mar 31, 2009

I had a scary Monday afternoon yesterday. On my way back to the office from the Pag-Ibig branch in Cubao with my sister, I received a text from my husband for me to proceed to the emergency room of The Medical City. He was there because his blood pressure shoot up to 190/110! It was 1pm and I haven't had lunch, combined with the heat outside, by the time I reached him at the ER, my hands were shaking. He was like this when I get there.

He was attached to an ECG machine and he was already given Catapres. A blood pressure monitor was also attached to his other arm. To say I was scared was an understatement. I was terrified! My husband works inside the hospital so when he felt really dizzy, he brought himself to the ER. It was not like him to call me and make me worry so I knew when he texted that he was really feeling bad. The diagnosis was poorly managed hypertension. He was told to refrain from taking salty/fatty foods and alcoholic beverages.

Here he is feeling better already. After 3 hours and with his dizziness almost gone, we were thankfully allowed to go home.

Now, I vowed to watch his diet more carefully and to remind him to exercise more religiously. I know that I am also at fault since I am the one who prepares the food, but on the exercise front, he is the only one to blame. He just won't budge some mornings for our jogging exercise! And I have a sneaky suspicion that he had a drink last Saturday when he saw I was already asleep. Anyway, we were both rightfully frightened by this experience and I really pray that this won't happen again.

Tsk, tsk hypertension at his age!

Boracay Beach Resorts

Mar 28, 2009

I have been to Boracay twice and I have stayed in 2 resorts that I would like to recommend to those who wish to go there this summer and take advantage of the Cebu Pacific seat sale.
My first Boracay trip was with friends in 2007 where we stayed at the Tonglen Beach Resort. The resort is at the Station 3, and 5-10 minutes away from the beach on foot.  We stayed at their large deluxe room with 2 big king-sized beds.  The rate for the room is P3,000 but we got a 50% discount, courtesy of a friend so we paid only P350 per person per night.  But even at P750 per person per night, the room is worth it.  The resort is very accessible from the airport as they have entrance near the main road.  They have a swimming pool and I recommend this if you are vacationing with kids.
Pictures below are of my good friends Ehms and Vangie.

The next Boracay beach resort I recommend is the Boracay Beach Resort.  We stayed here when we had our planning and teambuilding activity last year. The resort is at the station 2, and by the beach front.  For a group of 10, with 5 rooms at a 3 days, 2 nights package, the total cost was P38,200, inclusing breakfast and transfers.  The service is superb and the staff are very accomodating.

LP 51: Sapatos

Mar 26, 2009

Eto ang aking mga paang nakasuot ng water shoes ng unang beses na tumapak sa mala-pulbos na buhangin ng Boracay. Ipinahiram ito sa akin ng kaibigan at kumareng Weng. Ang thoughtful no?

Happy Birthday Drexelle!

Mar 25, 2009

Today is my eldest son's 11th birthday. In just a few more years, he will be chasing girls already. Oh how time flies! It felt like only yesterday when I held him as a baby, all 7.8 lbs of him. At 11, he is still very young, able to say I love you without mumbling or blushing. He gives me a kiss when he is asking for something or just because he wants to. He is sweet and super kulit and I love him dearly.

Here is my son with his killer smile :-)

Happy Birthday Drexelle!

Breast Cancer Awareness

In celebration of International Women's Month, our HR department sponsored a series of talks on women's health and I was fortunate to attend the Breast Cancer Awareness seminar. Dr. Cristina Santos, a breast surgeon from Gift2LIfe Inc. gave a very interesting talk. She told us about benign cysts and cancerous lumps, the economics of cancer and the effects it would have on you and your family. She emphasized that cancer is treatable and that the old notion that cancer means death is untrue. Dr. Santos emphasized that early detection means an increase in your chances of survival.

Wacoal also gave a talk on getting the perfect fit on your brassieres. Dr. Santos was quick to reply on a question regarding unfit bras and cancer, saying that it is a myth.

Gift2 Life Inc also gave a free breast examination and I was the second in line. I was afraid really that I might have a lump, and because I was continuously using oral contraceptives for 5 years. It increases the chances of getting cancer, as mentioned on the talk. Thankfully, I had no lump. Dr. Santos very kindly told me that I better talk to may husband about this so that we may both agree on what we could do as an alternative to our family planning method. She also advised me to have a mammogram at age 35 (it is recommended for 50 years and above, and 35 and above for those in high risk).

All-in all it was a very informative afternoon. Though I cringe at pictures of actual cancer victims, Dr. Santos was right in saying that we should be informed so that if there is somebody we know, especially our loved ones who might be at risk for breast cancer, we would know what to do.

By the way, Gift2Life Inc. gives Breast Cancer Awareness Lecture and Clinical Breast Examination with Biopsy for FREE. For more information, contact Dr. Cristina L. Santos (President, GIFT2LIFE INC) at +63917-8587237.

The Good Wife's Guide

Mar 21, 2009

I got this from forwarded email and thought to share it here.  This, according to the picture was on an issue of Housekeeping Monthly published in 13 May, 1955.  And 54 years after it was printed, reading this makes me laugh. Yes, laugh.  The notations on the picture are not mine, but they are the ones I would like to highlight as well. I can  understand how catering to his comfort can provide you with immense personal satisfaction.  See, if I am doing something for the man I love, it is not a chore.  Its love, and what I do is a sincere way of showing it.  However, his topics of conversation are not more important than mine.  If  I love the man and the man loves me back, what I have to say must be important to him as well.  But to never complain when he comes home late or goes out with his friends or stays out all night?  As a married man, he can do all of this, provided that the wife is aware of it.  It can happen some time, but not all the time.  I can understand that my husband has to have time with The Boys, to unwind and relax.  But not at the expense of his time with his family. I agree that I have no right to question his judgment and integrity because I already know him for the man he is. And if I knew the man I married, I know that we are in this together and that I am always part of the decision process. And the article is right.  A good wife must always know her place. And I know my place.  It is right beside my husband.

The Best Credit Card Deal

Mar 20, 2009

I am now ready to get a new card but I am still searching for the best credit card. I have to be sure that the one I like is for me. I have a shopaholic tendency so I need to think a lot of times before really deciding which one to get. Its nice that I can compare the benefits of the best credit cards in the market and assess which one could give me the best value for my money. Since I also want to get a car, I want those gas cards that will give me the convenience of paying with my card, at the gas retailer of my choice and at the same time, earn me big discounts, rebates and freebies! Those benefits will clinch the deal for me. I hope I can find the best credit card for me so I can already sign online.

I Love The Smell of Babies

The baby in the picture is my little girl, Ishi.

Our neighbor recently gave birth to a pretty baby girl and I was in line to hold it for a few minutes. I just love the smell of babies! Not one perfume can hold a candle to the smell of freshness that a baby brings. But now that its summer, I am always sure to sprinkle my kids with baby cologne to make them smelling fresh and newly-bathed. The kids are so active and I don’t want them smelling bad despite the heat. I also like to experiment on fragrances and I hope I can find a scent that resembles a newborn baby at this perfume blog.

Danniel Noel: The Graduate

Mar 19, 2009

Meet my son Danniel Noel, the class valedictorian for Little Angel Gabrielle Educational Center Batch 2009. He was awarded a total of 7 medals in all, 2 for academic excellence and 5 for strings of awards.

With the proud mommy while being awarded his certificate of recognition:With the proud daddy while being given his medals for strings of wards:

Here he is giving his valedictory address:

And with the proud parents after the medal on academic excellence:

PS: I had tons of pictures but a virus corrupted most of them! It almost ruined an otherwise perfect day. Good thing I managed to save 20+ pictures. I will have to wait for the shots from the school photographer before I can upload them here.

Newborn Baby Snatched From Mother

Mar 17, 2009

I saw this news headline and I had goosebumps while reading this. According to the news report, Janet Banico was on a jeepney and her way to the hospital for her check up when she felt the onset of her labor pains. She then alighted and flagged a taxi but two women, who she thought were just concerned for her, accosted her and told her they will bring her to the hospital. She refused their offer but they went with her anyway. At this point, she said one of the women made her smell something and when she woke up she was in room that did not look like a hospital. When she asked, they said she was at the hospital and that she had given birth to a baby girl. In the news article it said that she asked for her cellphone to call her partner but the nurse insisted she put it in speaker mode. After two days, her partner has not yet visited her and she insisted she wanted to go home but the nurse said she has to pay her bills first. Then the nurse gave her a pill that made her sleep and when she woke up she was lying in front of the Sta Cruz Church, in a bloodied hospital gown and with her newborn baby missing.

The article failed to answer some of my questions like were the police able to verify that she was admitted to the Metropolitan Hospital? If yes, then they can check the records and find out who the nurse is, or who discharged her and find out the record of admission, etc. If not, do they have similar reported cases? I doubt if Janet can remember where she was brought because she was put to sleep. But can she remember the logo and can they verify if that is the logo of the said hospital?

This is really a scary news! What kind of people prey on helpless pregnant women and kidnap their new born babies? I am sure the intention is to sell the baby but this is heartless! The women who accosted her are maybe mothers themselves or if not, they surely have mothers!
How could they do this to a fellow human being?

Oh my God. This is going to give me nightmares.

Lim to Ban Swimming In Manila Bay

Mar 14, 2009

I saw in the news yesterday  that Lim wants to ban swimming in Manila Bay. I hope my earlier entry on this helped him made him do this.  Its true that many people swim at the Manila Bay not only because they cannot afford to swim in private pools and resorts but also becasue these are not available in Metro Manila.  I hope that aside from banning the swimming at the Manila Bay, he also gives Manila residents an alternative place where they can swim for a minimal fee specially this summer.

My Speech at My Son's Graduation

Mar 13, 2009

My son is graduating at the top of his Preparatory class on Wednesday and the proud parent (me!) is asked to give a few words to the guests. Below is my short speech:

To our distinguished guest, teachers, parents, grandparents, friends and graduates, good morning.

In behalf of all the parents here, I would like to take this opportunity to extend my deepest gratitude to Teacher Owie, Teacher Thea, Teacher Irish and Teacher Rosalie for all the hard work and effort that they have all put in, in teaching our children. When Danniel first came at this school, he was a very shy little boy. Some of you may still remember him during their Kinder class Christmas presentation where he was too shy to sing, but stood with the rest of the class there anyway. He was not crying, but singing, if only to himself. It took a lot of courage, and even if I haven't told her then, I gave Teacher Thea my vote of confidence. And seeing my son today, graduating at the top of his Preparatory class and ready, even eager, for the big school, I know that I have made the right choice in entrusting my son to them. Again, my sincerest gratitude.

To my fellow parents and grand parents, I would like to congratulate all of you here for giving our children the gift of education. Wala man tayong maipamamanangyaman sa kanila, we have given them a start at a good education they will need in this life.

And to the graduates, congratulations on a job well done. Some of you will comeback here for Kinder and Prep while others will go on to the Big School. I'm sure you will all do wonderfully. Again, congratulations. You made us all very proud of you!

Danniel, anak, we love you.

Good morning to all of you.
Forgive me for sharing this as I am ridiculously proud! He was also the first honor in his kinder class last year, in the photo below.
Galing ng anak ko no? As my mother would say, manang mana daw sa ama! Ha ha.

For Those Who Didn't Get To Watch The Eraserheads Concert :Final Set

Mar 11, 2009

For those of you out there who like me, didn't get to watch the Eraserheads Reunion Concert Final Set for one reason or another, do not fret! Azrael is the man! He made a full photo coverage and mp3 recording of the concert and is sharing this to everyone out of the goodness of his heart.

O di ba, para na din tayong nandun?

I Want A Car Now!

We went to my sister's house in Taytay, Rizal last weekend and I was whining to my husband to buy us a car already, maybe one of those new ford cars! The taxi fare from our house in Sta Mesa to Taytay, Rizal is P250.00 and another P250.00 for the return trip. Had we rode the bus, the jeepney fare would be P7.00 from the house to Stop and Shop, then P39.00 for the bus fare, then another P8.00 for the tricycle to their house. And we were 5 adults and 2 kids, so taking the taxi is really more practical. If we have the budget right now, I want one of those ford cars that are suited for families and look very good at the same time. I heard in the UK, they have dealerships that would give us quotes that suit our needs and budget. I really want one of these New Ford cars!

Bakunado Ako

Mar 9, 2009

I was invited last week by Nuffnang to the second wave of their Flu Awareness Seminar and I was happy to attend. They also invited me the first time but mommy-duties prevented me from going. Last Saturday however, Drexelle and I went, learned a lot, got free flu shots and had a good time.

Dr. Ruby Mendoza-Dizon, Medical Director of Sanofi Pasteur Philippines gave a brief talk and I agree completely on what she said at the beginning of the seminar. She said that as mothers, we cannot control everything that can happen to our children, but what we can control or prevent, we will definitely do. And giving them protection against diseases is one of them.

Influenza, is a contagious, respiratory viral illness that is commonly mistaken as colds. The common symptoms of flu are runny nose, sore throat, headache, fever for 3-5 days, body aches and fatigue for about two weeks.

Flu can be passed on very easily , even while you haven't manifested the symptoms and until 7 days after you had it yourself. To prevent flu, we must have a well-balanced diet, exercise and most especially, vaccination or flu shots. Only people with true allergy to chicken eggs may not be vaccinated, but everybody must be vaccinated. The best time to get the vaccine is February-June, and every year thereafter.

We must remember that we must all be vaccinated against the flu, but more so if:
  1. you have Cardiac Problems
  2. if you have Diabetes
  3. if you have Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease
  4. if you have children
  5. if you have an elderly at home
  6. if you are pregnant
  7. even if you are healthy and working
  8. and 2 weeks before you travel abroad
Here are some questions raised during the seminar and Dr. Ruby's answer to them:
  1. How much does the vaccine cost? It depends but around P1,500-P2,000 (wow, big savings for us!)
  2. Is this given free by the local government? No, this vaccine is different from HIB vaccine given at health centers.
  3. When is the best time to get the flu shots? From February to June and then yearly.
  4. When do you get immunity? You are immune from flu two weeks after the shot. So those planning to travel must get in advance.
  5. Can I get the vaccine even if I am on the pill or other form contraception? Yes, everybody can be vaccinated except if you have a true allergy to chicken eggs.
  6. Can I drink after this? Yes! You can resume all forms of recreation after this.
  7. Do I need to be isolated after vaccination? No, becasue the flu virus is inactive.
All in all, it was a fun and very educational aftenoon.

Dr. Ruby ended her talk with a challenge:
Don't Get The Flu.
Don't Spread The Flu.
Get Vaccinated.
Bakunado Ka Na Ba?
And we are happy to say that:

Drexelle & Mommy, Bakunado sa Flu!

Francis M is Dead

Mar 6, 2009

Photo from i-gma-tv.
I was just on my way back to the office when my sister called me to ask if my husband, who works at The Medical City has told that Francis M is dead. I texted my husband right away and he confirmed that indeed, Francis M is dead. Last year, Francis M was diagnosed with Leukemia. He finally succumbed to the disease today.

Francis M, also known as the Master Rapper was 44 years old. It was so sudden and I was just blogging about Ely Buendia and Francis M doing an album, and celebrating both of their comebacks.

Life is really short. My condolences to his family.

LP 48: Bag

Eto ang aking P35.00 body bag. Nabili ko ito sa ukay-ukay at ako ay masaya sa pagkakahanap ko sa bag na ito. Madaling bitbitin at madaling gamitin.

I Will Miss The Eraserheads Reunion Concert Part 2: The Final Set

Mar 4, 2009

I was there the first time, but sadly I wont be able to watch the Final Set. I am thinking of starting again my fund drive, Piso Para Makapanood Si Dinah ng Concert ng Eraserheads, but decided that seeing them at the First Reunion concert has to be enough for me. With seats at 5k, 3k, 1.3k and 300 I just can't afford it. Well I can, but I will feel a lot guilty about it after. Seats are still available as I write this though.

I don't know if this will be made into DVDs again, and if yes I will surely watch out for it. I didn't get to see my face in the video of the original concert, but is happy knowing I was there when history unfolds.

Oh well, I am still wishing for tickets to magically fall from the heavens, although the possibility of that happening is close to zero.

For those of you who will watch the Final Set, kwentuhan nyo na lang kami!

I am a Proud Mommy!

Mar 3, 2009

My son Danniel will graduate at the top of his Preparatory Class and I am one proud mommy! When we brought him to school this morning, his adviser was all smiles and told me to prepare a speech for this coming graduation. Of course he was Top 1 from first grading until the 3rd and this morning was just a confirmation of what we knew (and hoped) all along. But its different when its official already. You can brag about it which is exactly what I am doing right now. He he!

Congratulations, Anak! And yes, you will have that bike :-)
