Save Money By Going Green: Happy Earth Day!

Apr 22, 2009

Happy Earth Day, All Earthlings!

Let us all get out acts together and help reduce wastes and pollution to save our planet. As they say, this is the only one we've got.

Here are some tips on how to save money by going green. This was also shared to us by our well-intentioned HR department.

  • Resist overusing your air conditioner. Set it on timer so that it shuts off in the middle of the night/closer to dawn, when temperatures are cooler.
  • Install ceiling fans or even look into water-cooled chillers.
  • Switch to compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFL), which use less than a third of regular bulbs and last ten times longer.
  • Turn off lights when not in use and make the most of natural daylight.
  • Unplug unused chargers because they continue to draw electricity.
  • Learn how to use the power-saving options in your computer. (Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel > Power Management > Power Options > Choose always On from the drop down menu > Look at the turn off monitor / turn off hard disks)
  • More than just shutting them down, turn off computers, TVs, night right at the power-strip or unplug them completely.
  • Always think before you print! Ask yourself If you really need a printed copy of the document, and consider printing on econo-mode. Use paper on both sides. You can even create notepads with padding glue!
  • Invest in rechargeable batteries. It might not sound like much, but they will help you save money over time. In general, the less you rely on single-use items, the less money you’ll burn.
  • Resist the temptation to throw out a perfectly good electronic gadget because something new comes along. Electronic waste, simply because of the materials the items contain, puts many harmful chemicals into the environment.
  • Cut back on gas by driving at cruising speed, and don’t take off from a stop light/sign like you’re a race car!
  • Save gas too by decreasing your drag. You can remove the luggage racks and other heavy items you don’t need in the trunk of your car.
  • Clean out your air filter – this can improve your gas mileage by as much as 10%!
  • Take local / regional vacations (and fly Cebu Pacific!) instead of going to far-flung places. You’ll save money on your airfare, while reducing the carbon emissions.
Again, let us take care of our planet, not just for us but for our kids and their future.
