There is a Filipino saying that goes, "manakawan ka na, wag ka lang masunugan" and this is so true because the robber would at least leave you with something, unlike a fire that razes everything to the ground! So now that it is officially summer season, March is being celebrated as Fire Prevention Month. I enjoin everybody to take it seriously because of possible loss of property or lives if we are not aware of the dangers of fire.

I am very fortunate to be part of a company that takes fire prevention very seriously. We have an annual fire drill and an orientation for fire marshals who will usher everybody out of the building should a fire occur. We are located at the top of our building and we had to climb down 42 floors, using the fire exit, the stair well. While it was very tiring, it was a worthwhile experience because we already know how it is to climb down and we know our way already.

Since I was a fire marshal, I also made it a point to teach my kids safety measures at home and to seek immediate help as soon as there is fire. Let us keep our homes and work place safe by checking for fire hazards, and checking our electrical wiring and appliances at home. Remember, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure!
